You are right beardielover17 i've taken Safira off the sand i find it hard to keep clean and Safira kept wanting to lick at it. I've put fake grass in the enclosure shes in at the moment hopefully she will only be in it for 3 months at the most,I plan on giving tiles another go i think the tiles i tryed with Safira weren't rough enough.

good luck to you with the tiles again =]

thank you for posting this it was very helpful I havent had a beardy in a couple years and for the life of me couldnt remember what substrate i was using before but I had used walnut as the pet store owner said thats the best thing it was what he was using but I didnt use it for long I started hearing horror stories about cut up intestines so we opted for the stone tiles and they were awesome we didnt grout them but they were so tight we had issues when we had to remove them but there was no odor retained in them and clean up was a breeze , I will definately be using them again, thanks again for the post though I always thought about what othere substrates where out there. I am currently useing walnut shells until i build my beardie a cage, but only just because i have them.
I just celaned out his tank last weekend and when i cleared the sand on the bottom was dried up smelly liquid poo. i was so grossed out and it made the tank small and i never knew why. i defiantly will never use walnut if i had the option to. i am going to put tile in the new cage.

Thanks for all the info nice to see the differnce on one pg.  Grin

you can remove the shells and put down newspaper or paper towel until you redo the cage...i personally think sand would be an even safe option than the shells

I really, REALLY appreciate this post. Sal (our 2 year old male) is on sand right now, but we were thinking about going with tile, and actually just got back from Home Depot about 2 hours ago, trying to figure out exactly how to do it!  Grin  As I said, he is on sand now (not Calcisand, just the regular sand from the pet store I assume - he came with it) and hasn't shown any issues with it but I worry because of everything I've heard.

This is just the post we needed to sort out which substrate to switch to!
